Minimum IT requirements for using the app

Minimum system and device requirements to run the app on mobile, desktop, and web—plus network, browser, and whitelist info.

Written by Alicia Lamontagne

Mobile App Requirements

Supported Operating Systems

The platform supports the last 3 major versions of:

  • iOS

  • Android

Example:
If the latest iOS version is 16, the app supports iOS 16, 15, and 14. If iOS 17 is released, the app will support 17, 16, and 15. Minor updates (e.g. iOS 16.1) do not change support.

Android-Specific Notes

  • For full functionality, the Chrome browser must be updated to the latest 2 major versions. the app uses Chrome’s engine to render the Android app.

  • Device compatibility: Due to fragmentation, the platform cannot guarantee performance across all Android devices.

  • We recommend using devices from established brands such as:

    • Samsung

    • Google

    • OnePlus

Before bulk purchasing, test the app on your chosen device.

Desktop Web App Requirements

Supported Browsers

The platform supports the last 2 major versions of:

  • Chrome

  • Firefox

  • Edge

For Safari, we support the last 2 minor versions.

Example:
If Chrome’s latest version is 120, the platform supports 120 and 119. For Safari, versions like 17.3 and 17.2 would be supported.

Recommendation

we recommend using an iOS device over a desktop browser on the factory floor.

Windows Desktop App Requirements

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or Windows 11

  • CPU: Minimum 2 GHz

  • RAM: 4 GB or more

  • Screen Resolution: 720p or higher

The Windows app can be deployed using Microsoft’s distribution guidelines.

Recommended iOS Devices

Best Value: iPad (Standard)

  • Balanced cost and portability

  • Great for viewing and creating content

  • Recommended for most users

For Portability: iPad Mini

  • Compact and ideal for mobile roles like maintenance

  • Less suitable for content creation

For Power Users: iPad Pro or iPad Air

  • High performance and large screen

  • Better for content creation

  • Higher cost

Always choose the latest iPad generation to maximize support lifespan. Test before large purchases.

Recommended iOS Apps

  • Apple Photos: Edit images

  • Apple iMovie: Edit videos

Both apps are free.

Tablet Planning Guidelines

When deciding how many tablets to purchase:

Consider:

  • Proximity to users – keep devices near workstations

  • Availability of other tools – existing PCs or phones can reduce tablet needs

Typical Allocation:

  • 1 tablet per shift for maintenance or supervisors

  • Shared tablets for operators across shifts

  • 1 tablet per workstation, adjusted based on use (ratios like 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3)

Content creators should have tablets available during the implementation phase.

For normal operation, tablets should have at least 32 GB of disk space. For users who will create multiple content items within the platform (e.g., photos, videos), it is recommended to use tablets with at least 128 GB of storage.

Network Requirements

Bandwidth Estimation Formula

Use this formula to calculate the required bandwidth:

(Number of Poka users ÷ shifts per day) × % connected employees × % watching video simultaneously (max 5%) × 5 Mbps

Example:
200 users / 3 shifts × 90% × 5% × 5 Mbps = 15 Mbps

  • Live Streaming (HLS) is supported on iOS for bandwidth optimization.

Platform Version Support

To ensure proper performance, clients are responsible for keeping the apps up to date (iOS, Android, Windows).

Protective Cases

We recommend using Otterbox hard cases for:

  • iPads

  • Android tablets

  • Windows tablets

Wi-Fi Requirements

  • Wi-Fi is required to use the platform properly

  • Validate coverage with the actual device (e.g. iPad)
